artist statement
Feeling constrained by the literal in my early work and searching for a more honest and purposeful meaning, I gravitated to a more abstract form. That form came to me through the act of painting itself and its grounding effect — like being in nature.
Though a particular place may be an inspiration, it is not the subject. I find the painting through the application of the paint to the surface of the canvas. Perhaps there is an initial idea or feel for a theme or concept, but it is undeveloped; it is the development that becomes my purpose as an artist. |
